Original 1972 George Harrison Concert For Bangladesh Gold Record RIAA Award
The Concert For Bangladesh triple album, documenting two benefit concerts held at Madison Square Garden in 1971, was certified gold by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) on January 4, 1972 — two weeks after its release. Musicians participating in the Concert For Bangladesh included former Beatles George Harrison and Ringo Starr, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Ravi Shankar, Billy Preston, Leon Russell, Jesse Ed Davis, Klaus Voorman, the members of Badfinger, and many others. It was the first-ever benefit concert of such a magnitude. This 100% original “white matte” style award is presented to Roy Cicala and The Record Plant. Cicala was a legendary producer, engineer, songwriter and musician who, as chief engineer at the Record Plant, recorded and produced a veritable “who’s who” of the greatest artists of modern music. Apparently, this award had been hanging on its wall for several years prior to its sale. Flaws: The frame measures approximately 17.5″ x 21.5″ and, as shown in the photo, has various scuffs and nicks as well as six wall mounting holes. The label has loosened from the gold disk and shows some bleed-through of the glue as a result of some moisture damage. The lower one inch of the linen matte is discolored from moisture damage. The back of the award has some tears in the paper backing as shown in the photo. Please excuse the reflections on the glass in the main photo — I also included another photo with minimal reflections so you can get a somewhat better look. All that being said, however, this award is a remarkable historical artifact. I have also been a consultant and contributor to many of the top Beatles collector’s reference books. Please ask all questions you might have before purchasing, as the sale will be final.
